Title 42 and my Apparent Misinformation
This post re-states something I tried to say on Linkedin about Title 42 but apparently violated Linkedin's standards for misinformation. I am open to people telling what the misinformation is!
I believe resolving the U.S./Mexico migrant crisis is probably the most important immigration issue in the United States right now. I wrote about it just yesterday on 12/31/22, here.
Later in the evening I noticed a Twitter post by Dan Kowalski (a very respected subject matter expert on immigration who posts regularly on immigration news). Dan linked to a Reuters article on the proposed expansion of Title 42 to additional nationalities. Dan’s Twitter post is here:
So I did my own bit of research and found a Politico article basically saying the same thing as the Reuters article.
Then I posted something on Linkedin which was basically my summary of what has occurred with Title 42. Here is what I posted:
“Someone feel free to correct me if this summary is wrong. Here is my understanding:
— Trump Admin “invented using Title 42 to keep people from entering the US along the southern border. It is based off public health and Covid concerns.
— Trump loses. Then the Biden Admin decried the policy and went to court - all the way to the Supreme Court - to end the policy.
— Along the way the Biden Admin started using Title 42 against Venezuelans and it basically “worked” — greatly reducing the number of Venezuelans seeking to enter.
— Now the Biden Admin looks to expand Title 42 to more nationalities, seemingly making a Trump policy on Covid the cornerstone of US border policy.”
I don’t know if I was ‘reported’ for misinformation by someone who read the post or maybe there was some kind of algorithm that saw the post and flagged it.
Maybe someone was offended by my mention that Title 42 appears to now be the “cornerstone” of US border policy.
To be clear, I am opposed to the expansion of Title 42. I am not sure if that helps or hurts my cause. People are obviously free to make their own decisions about the policy.
The American Immigration Council wrote a good, detailed background piece about Title 42 (last updated in May 2022). You can find it here.
It seems to me that we are no longer in a Covid emergency situation and we should not have a border policy that relies on public health/Covid emergency. I also think it is very weird and arbitrary that Title 42 applies only to certain nationalities where the U.S. can get into some agreement with Mexico. That belies any relationship to the science of Covid.
I have appealed to Linkedin about my post being removed. I have posted a lot on Linkedin over several years but this is the first time a post of mine was removed. I don’t actually know how long the appeal takes.
I don’t think it is misinformation. I think there was some commentary - sure. But I am not encouraging anyone to storm the Capitol Building in defense or opposition to Title 42.
I think the United States is filled with people with varied views about U.S. immigration policy and we need to figure out a way to discuss these things (including on social media platforms), and while I don’t think my post was particularly insightful, I also don’t think it was/is misinformation that should be banned.
